- President Sheinbaum Pardo and the press received the National Security Report October 2024 by Marcela Figueroa
This morning at a press conference, Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, along with Marcela Figueroa Franco, head of the Executive Secretariat of the National Public Security System, provided a detailed report on crime rates nationwide for October 2024.
This update highlights a notable decrease in various crime indicators, marking progress in efforts to combat crime across different regions.
Figueroa Franco presented an analysis of homicide trends, emphasizing that after a steady rise from 2015 to 2018, the peak occurred in February 2019 with an average of 100.9 homicides per day.
Since then, this figure has gradually declined, reaching an average of 83 daily homicides in October 2024—a 17.3% reduction.
Additionally, the geographic concentration of homicides reveals that half of these cases occur in seven states, with Guanajuato and Baja California being the most affected.
Decrease in High-Impact Crimes
In terms of high-impact crimes, the trend also shows a sustained decline.
Figueroa Franco reported that the daily average of these crimes—including homicides, femicides, firearm injuries, kidnappings, and various forms of violent robberies—has dropped by 37.2% since 2019.
Significant reductions were noted in kidnapping and violent home robberies, with decreases of 72% and 44.2%, respectively.
Despite these improvements, a slight increase was noted in aggravated assaults and vehicle thefts with violence over the past few months of 2024.
In response, the security cabinet is already analyzing these data to reinforce preventive strategies.

Situation in Sinaloa and Rise in Homicides
A critical point in the report was the situation in Sinaloa, where homicides have recently increased due to conflicts among criminal groups.
Between September and October 2024, the state’s daily average homicide rate rose sharply to 5.77, compared to previous months.
Local authorities, in collaboration with federal forces, have ramped up operations to curb this violence and restore peace in the region.
Decrease in Federal and Common Crimes
The report also detailed trends in federal crimes.
The analysis showed that the daily average of federal crimes has dropped by 22.1% from 2019 to 2024, with a significant decrease in crimes related to the General Health Law and the Federal Penal Code, both down by 28%.
However, challenges remain in the area of extortion, which, unlike other crimes, has shown a slight increase.
Overall, this security review reflects a concerted effort by Claudia Sheinbaum’s administration and the public security team to improve safety conditions in Mexico.
