- Sheinbaum at G20: Focus on the Most Needy and Women’s Rights
Mexican President-elect Claudia Sheinbaum is preparing to participate in the G20 Summit, which will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on November 18 and 19.
At this important forum, Sheinbaum will reaffirm Mexico’s commitment to the Fourth Transformation and highlight the importance of prioritizing attention to the most vulnerable, as well as the vindication of women’s rights.
Sheinbaum noted that her participation will seek to highlight how a small portion of global military spending could be allocated to supporting the most needy people in the world.
“It is crucial to rethink the use of resources and allocate a percentage of that budget to the well-being of those who need it most,” she explained.
The president-elect highlighted that this approach reflects Mexico’s experience in redirecting funds to strengthen social and economic development.
Social Programs and Welfare Models
During the summit, Sheinbaum will present examples of the humanistic model that has characterized Mexico, including programs such as the Pension for the Well-being of Older Adults and Sembrando Vida.
The latter will be one of the main focuses, as it is recognized for reducing poverty, generating local and regional development, and strengthening the relationship of communities with the land and agriculture.
The president-elect highlighted that initiatives like this also contribute to reducing migration and help combat climate change by capturing carbon.
Sheinbaum emphasized that if part of the military resources were redirected to similar projects, the underlying causes of migration could be addressed and peace promoted.
She stressed that Mexico will arrive at the G20 with the firm conviction of dialoguing on equal terms and without subordinating itself to other nations, reaffirming the sovereignty of the country.
International Relations and Strategic Alliances
The president-elect stressed the importance of the bilateral relationship with the United States and expressed her confidence that both countries will maintain a respectful and productive dialogue.
Sheinbaum explained that in the review of the Treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada (T-MEC), working groups have been formed that involve both Mexican businessmen and American investors to ensure agreements that benefit all parties.
For his part, Juan Ramón de la Fuente Ramírez, head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, confirmed that Mexico will support the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, a proposal by the president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
This initiative seeks to bring together the G20 countries in a common commitment to confront global poverty, and Mexico has already expressed its intention to be a founding part of this alliance.

Mexico and the Humanitarian Mobility Model
De la Fuente also highlighted the humanitarian approach that Mexico has adopted in matters of migration.
The Humanitarian Mobility Model, implemented since the previous administration, has as its main objective to protect the rights of migrants throughout the migration process, from their origin to their destination and return.
This approach has led to a 76% decrease in irregular crossings at the northern border, according to recent data.
The model is coordinated by the Intersecretarial Commission for Comprehensive Attention in Migration Matters (CIAIMM) and has the participation of various secretariats, including the Interior, Defense, Navy, Security and Citizen Protection, Labor and Social Security, Welfare and Foreign Relations.
This joint effort seeks to offer a comprehensive and humane response to current migration challenges.
With her participation in the summit, Claudia Sheinbaum will bring to the G20 a message of solidarity, inclusion and sustainable development, reflecting Mexico’s position as a country committed to social justice and the rights of all its citizens.
