Claudia Sheinbaum has been officially declared the president-elect of Mexico after the Federal Electoral Tribunal (TEPJF) validated her victory in the presidential election held on June 2.
Sheinbaum secured an impressive 35.9 million votes, surpassing the number of votes previously garnered by Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
The TEPJF removed any remaining obstacles by rejecting the final appeals filed by the opposition, which sought to annul the election results.
On Monday, August 12, the tribunal dismissed the last two challenges, declaring the requests for nullification unfounded.
Additionally, the court dismissed, by majority, a lawsuit filed by Xóchitl Gálvez, who, while not seeking to annul the process, highlighted serious irregularities (according to the former candidate’s judgment).
Next Steps for Claudia Sheinbaum
On Thursday, August 15, Sheinbaum will attend the Electoral Tribunal’s headquarters to receive her certificate of majority, formally solidifying her position as Mexico’s president-elect.
According to her transition team, after receiving the certificate, Sheinbaum will head to the Metropolitan Theater in downtown Mexico City, where she will deliver a public address at 2:00 p.m.
As of now, it has not been confirmed whether outgoing President Andrés Manuel López Obrador will attend the event. However, it is expected that he will be asked about it during his morning press conference on the same day.
