- New Holiday in Mexico? Claudia Sheinbaum’s proposal for AMLO Day on July 1
Claudia Sheinbaum, virtual president-elect of Mexico, has raised the possibility of establishing July 1 as a commemorative day in honor of the victory of Andrés Manuel López Obrador in the 2018 presidential elections.
Sheinbaum’s initiative seeks to recognize this political achievement as a significant date in the country’s recent history.
During an event organized by the National Regeneration Movement (Morena) at Los Pinos Cultural Complex, Sheinbaum presented three options to name this new celebration: ‘Day of the revolution of consciences’, ‘Day of the triumph of the people’ and ‘Day of true democracy’.
This place, which previously served as the official residence of Mexican presidents, symbolizes the change that López Obrador implemented by moving the presidential residence to the National Palace.

Sheinbaum highlighted in her speech that July 1 should be recognized as a historic date, arguing that the 2018 electoral victory marked the end of the “old neoliberal model.”
She also mentioned that the recent victory of her coalition in the June 2 elections is a continuation of the transformation begun in 2018, reaffirming the commitment of the Mexican people to the Fourth Transformation.

The future president pledged to preserve and continue López Obrador’s legacy, highlighting achievements such as the Welfare Pension for those over 68, support for people with disabilities and scholarships for high school students.
“There will be no return to the past,” Sheinbaum said, underlining her intention to continue fighting for the reforms initiated by her predecessor.
Importance of the Mayan Train and Judicial Reform
Sheinbaum also emphasized the importance of judicial reform, one of the most significant constitutional amendments promoted by López Obrador and which she has committed to promoting.
Additionally, she highlighted the Mayan Train, describing it as a symbol of progress with justice. This project, which includes more than 1,500 kilometers of railway tracks for transporting cargo, tourists and local passengers in the southeast of the country, is seen as an emblem of regional development.
In her vision of the future, Sheinbaum promised to expand the country’s rail network, increasing train kilometers from 1,500 to 3,000 over the next six years.
This effort seeks not only to improve transportation infrastructure, but also to promote economic and social growth in various regions of Mexico.

Will Sheinbaum live in the National Palace?
When asked if she will follow in López Obrador’s footsteps and live in the National Palace, Sheinbaum admitted that she has not yet made a final decision.
She acknowledged that there are advantages to residing in the historic property and that he is considering all options.
“We are analyzing everything that has to do with the Presidency,” she commented, leaving open the possibility of maintaining the tradition established by her predecessor.
Claudia Sheinbaum is preparing to assume the presidency on October 1, with an agenda focused on the continuity of the transformation and the implementation of policies that promote social justice and sustainable development throughout the country.
